About the Exhibit

Earthquakes are a big deal in Kentucky, especially in western Kentucky where big earthquakes have happened before. Sometimes when an earthquake happens in an area where there is a lot of sandy soil, like along the Ohio River, the soil can liquefy, which is bad news for the buildings sitting on top of the soil. Why? For this exhibit, we will make an earthquake in a box to model the process of liquefaction. You will see liquefaction happen with your own eyes, learn why it happens, and find out what you can do about it.
