Exhibitor: University of Kentucky Department of Civil Engineering Location: FPAT / Basement Room S016 About the Exhibit Sometimes during earthquakes, sandy soil turns into liquid! This is called "liquefaction" just like you see in the movies. Believe it or not, earthquakes and liquefaction have occurred in Kentucky! We are going to make an "earthquake in a box" and watch as soil liquefies during the earthquake and you will see it with your own eyes!!!Earthquakes are a big deal in Kentucky, especially in western Kentucky where big earthquakes have happened before. Sometimes when an earthquake happens in an area where there is a lot of sandy soil, like along the Ohio River, the soil can liquefy, which is bad news for the buildings sitting on top of the soil. Why? For this exhibit, we will make an earthquake in a box to model the process of liquefaction. You will see liquefaction happen with your own eyes, learn why it happens, and find out what you can do about it.
