About the Exhibit
What is soil? Why would an engineer care?
Learn how engineers classify soil with several active, hands-on stations where you can see that soil is made up of gravel, sand, silt, and clay. These different types of materials have unique properties that engineers have to think about when doing their jobs. You can shake soil in a jar to see how soil settles in layers, sift soil to see how complex it is, and decide what type of soil is best suited to build on with a model subdivision. Be ready to get your hands dirty!
